Bringing Charity and Technology to New Heights

June 21, 2013  |  KiliTechTrek, Sponsors, Stories

Imagine combining innovative technologies, a philanthropic cause and climbing the highest mountain in Africa and you will have a very powerful and fascinating mix.

That was KiliTechTrek: a group of TECHNOPHILES from Silicon Valley, Europe and Asia climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (a stunning 5,895mt/19,341ft) to swap ideas, test technology and raise funds for a local non-profit.

KiliTechTrek saw a very diverse group of tech execs from Silicon Valley, Europe and Asia representing large companies like Amazon, eBay, PayPal, startups like Livestation and Staanoi, and MindTheBridge (a startup accelerator and seed investment fund) get together and take a set of challenges.

We climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise funds for a local non-profit (Amani Camani135hildren’s Home) that supports the homeless children of Tanzania. KiliTechTrek and Summit Stories are supporting Amani in their next big challenge: to purchase and build a new welcome center in the city of Arusha that will help support up to 100 new children per year.

Our fundraising runs until the end of June and it is our goal to hit the magic 20,000$ mark (we are at about 16,000$ right now). JOIN US by making a donation or spreading the word about our fundraiser.

In addition to the charitable cause, KiliTechTrek focused on the use of technology by its participants before and during the trek.

KiliTechTrek partnered with TECH COMPANIES to enable Trekkers to power their devices with Goalzero portable solar panels, transfer media seamlessly to their phones with Eye-Fi wireless memory cards, record their biometrics with the Runtastic mobile apps and gps phone and transfer money on the trail using PayPal.

I feel incredibly blessed to have made this trek as we ascended Africa’s highest mountain for a great charitable cause and used the latest technologies on the way. This is an impactful story and I hope it is as inspirational for others as it is for me!

We will share more stories, images and videos in the coming weeks – stay tuned.
